Lately, my subconscious has been musing on Scheherzade and... unequal relationships, I suppose, even when they're balanced in your favor. I mean, I understand that it's miraculous to find a man who has no feelings towards you, who just wants to hear your stories day in and day out, tells you to come back and talk some more, and actually remembers what you said when you yourself have forgotten.
But Scher, honey, didn't you want to know even one of the king's tales? Possibly not, given the circumstances, but still, that doth not a relationship make. It makes the king's nightly entertainment. Surely if ol' Scher was as smart as Wikipedia makes her out to be, she'd see this. Right?
Or is this more than most people get out of a relationship anyway? I just feel like maybe in some ways she took everything from the king, without giving back enough in return. Am I being too much of a chauvinist in assuming that a woman's mouth typically wouldn't be encouraged to stay open that long without male anatomy being involved?
Just so we're clear, I'm not suggesting she ought to have repaid him with sex. In fact, the opposite. A man who wants to listen is so rare, that I think there can be a lot more to that relationship than passive listening and stereotypical conclusions.
"I didn't ask him because deep down I was afraid he wasn't capable of loving me the way I wanted to be loved. "
I don't know if this is just me, but when I find a guy who wants to hear me talk that long without an ulterior motive, I want to hear him talk just as much. Not so we'd fall in love, because 'in love' doesn't even come into the picture. The only thing I'm in love with is the fact that he isn't in love with me.
