The Anti-Hypocrisy Movement

Did you know the Indian constitution's been amended more times than any other constitution in the world? Does constant reinforcement make it weaker or stronger? Apparently, most Indians don't care. They're too busy writing up their own version, applicable to just them.

Like the guy who thinks it's okay that everyone else is waiting in line, but he deserves an exception just because he feels like one. Or like the woman and children eagerly pouncing on theater seats that are 500 bucks more expensive than the ones they paid for, just because they happened to be empty.

Of course, the first guy isn't okay with anyone else cutting in line, oh no no. As for the woman and the children, moralistic speeches about having paid for those seats would have erupted had someone else dared to take the seats, were the tables changed.

No one thinks to even question the mark up on the candles they buy to support whatever cause it's fashionable to support. Who else thinks that 'fasting to death' is political blackmail - at best petty, and at worst illegal?

I honestly don't care about Anna Hazare or the Lokpal bill. I'm concerned that more people don't protest about more things. Not with marches and signs and the media, but just because you know very well that you would say something if someone else did what you think you can get away with doing.

So... and listen carefully all you people who give in to auto drivers' outrageous demands or litter outside other people's houses... say. something. Even if you're not personally affected. And realize, once you've protested against someone else doing something, that you can't just waltz out there and do it yourself the next day. The rules don't change for different people and/or different situations. No really, they don't even change for you.

If we honestly gave half a crap about freedom of speech or independence or whatever else we pretend to give a crap about, it's about time we showed it in the choices we make every day, rather than just because there's a cricket match on.
